The inaugral issue of EcoSphere

Welcome to EcoSphere, Green Professionals' Quarterly newsletter. You received this as you attended a training session conducted by our sister company, Sustainable Footprint in 2009. During the trainings a number of participants expressed an interest in joining a membership body that could offer support and technical assistance to assessors and allow for continuing networking opportunities between trainees.

While ABSA is the representative body of Accredited Assessors, it is not their stated role to provide library resources and work opportunities to their members. As such, Green Professionals are continuously developing a service that compliments ABSA's objectives of Accreditation, Professional Development and Policy Advice. EcoSphere aims to provide its readers with relevant information on developments in the sustainability field, including Federal and State based policy initiatives, issues affecting members and other news items relevant to Green Professionals.

Please note that if you are not a Green Professionals member, you will not receive subsequent issues of this newsletter. If you would like to continue receiving updates, we urge you to consider membership. It is free until 2011!

Picture Credit : Earth Day 2009. This turbine installed in Hamburg last year can produce up to six megawatts of power (enough to power over 450 000 CFL light globes). To replace the peak output of the Hazelwood power station (1600 MW), over 267 of these would be needed to be running at maximum capacity. Notice the litle orange and yellow dots. Those are installation crew! More on wind power in Australia

Solar PVs and feed-in tariffs
Australia's stationary energy sector, which includes electricity derived from coal-fired power, is responsible for around 50 percent of our greenhouse gas emissions. Despite the perceived failures of government delegates in Copenhagen at the end of 2009, Australia's environmental, economic and energy security remains at risk in the long-term unless we can compete in a low-carbon world.

Successful climate change solutions must target the energy sector to reduce our addiction to coal. Clean energy resources, like solar power, have the capacity to power many Australian homes and businesses and push us in the direction of a cleaner, more sustainable economy...

Training
ABSA have yet to release details on the training required to maintain accreditation. However, there are numerous sources of ongoing development for those wishing to continue their education within the Green Collar Industry.

Green Professionals are always on the look out for suitable training opportunities for members. We seek to partner with organisations that have similar values to ours and, where possible, secure discounts for members. At this time we have identified two groups, Aspin Learning and CERES Environment Park, who are offering training we believe is complimentary to the backgrounds of our members. In the future we will be endeavoring to provide training opportunities in the areas of Residential Mandatory reporting, Commercial Environmental Audits and Carbon Accounting.

How much for an Assessment?
Many assessors have asked us if we can provide them with assessments. While we do have some active projects (See Sustainable Suburbs), we do not currently have enough prospects to keep all our members busy. This has largely been because we select our partners quite carefully. Increasingly, we have been approached by 'lead generating organisations' offering HSAS appointments. These offers typically have strings attached in the form of a fee per appointment.

While a fee is appropriate to cover admin and marketing costs we would like to know what our assessors are comfortable paying for leads. This enables us to offer work to those who are not getting as much work as they would like.

Please complete this short survey if you are interested in obtaining HSAS appointments on a fee for appointment basis.
